Sparks has always been a great place to raise a family, start a business, be part of a community!

A Nevadan Through and Through

Meet Chris

FAMILY VALUES and COMMUNITY ROOTS

Born and raised in Sparks, Chris Garvey’s deep connection to our community is undeniable. Growing up Chris embraced the values of family hard work and community that her parents instilled in their children.

Dedication

Chris and her family have always been dedicated to community and civil involvement.

Chris’ father, ‘Pat’ Flynn, served in the Korean War; working the rail yards during his deployment. Upon returning home to Sparks he married the girl next door, started a family and worked for than 40 years as a brakeman/conductor for the Southern Pacific Rail Road.
Her mother, Yvonne, was one of the first women to graduate from the University of Nevada Reno, with a civil engineering degree. She encouraged her children to follow their dreams, explore the world and give back to the community.

Throughout her adult life, Chris Garvey has been a steadfast advocate for family values and community stability. Her journey, marked by 43 years of marriage, raising three children and now enjoying the company of four grandchildren, exemplifies her commitment to nurturing strong family foundations.

Chris is a Sparks hometown gal, with deep family ties. She returned to Sparks after an impactful tenure on the Clark County School Board in order to care for her 86- year-old mother Yvonne.
After graduating from Reed High School, Chris attended the University of Nevada, Reno and went on to earn an Associates Degree in Applied Sciences for Dental Hygiene from the College of Southern Nevada.

She currently works part time as a dental hygienist with over 20 years of experience. Chris also has worked in Mental health and disabilities and was licensed as a realtor in the 1990’s.

Beyond her professional pursuits, she expresses her creativity and hands-on approach through hobbies like painting, home renovations and gardening.

Platform

“Sparks has always been a great place to raise a family, start a business, be part of a community.”

Unfortunately, over the last few years the citizens of Sparks have experienced rising crime, safety issues- from traffic gridlock to crumbling infrastructure. Empty retail space and the closing of businesses in downtown Sparks is a growing concern. In addition, the city struggles with increasing numbers of homeless.

While other areas of Sparks have flourished, Ward 1 which includes the oldest parts of the city, has been negatively impacted the most by these troubling issues.

I, like so many other residents and business owners that live and work in Ward 1, know that if these issues were resolved everyone’s quality of life would improve.

I believe we can achieve this with the right leadership and policies.

As your Sparks City Councilmember for Ward 1

My priorities will be:

Public Safety – keeping our neighborhoods, parks, and public areas safe is priority #1

Support our Seniors – a vulnerable population

Growth that Makes Sense – revitalize our neighborhoods and small business centers.

Traffic – invest in commonsense solutions that allow traffic to flow and make our streets safer.

Transparency and Efficiency in Government – making sure we have accountability for spending and that we get the most from our tax dollars.

Family dedication and community involvement forms the cornerstone of her candidacy for Sparks City Council, Ward 1.

Seniors

Washoe County and Sparks has a rapidly growing senior population. This is a matter of utmost importance as we strive to create an optimistic future where our, and remember, I’m a member of our Sparks senior population, are ensured a comfortable, safe and fulfilling life.

Seniors need access to healthcare services; we need to collaborate with health care providers and organizations to increase accessibility of senior-oriented medical care. We need to encourage the development of specialized geriatric centers and businesses that provide products for age related ailments and personalized care.
Right now, Sparks does not have enough suitable housing options. We must create affordable housing that is specifically designed for seniors, equipped with the necessary amenities and accessibility features that will allow our seniors to retain their independence while receiving the help they need.

Our seniors need community engagement that promotes an optimistic environment and meets their needs. One great resource is the Sparks Senior Center that is staffed and run by Washoe County. Sparks seniors need to have more input on what activities, educational classes, exercise programs and social events are provided at the Senior Center; so that those decisions reflect their needs and interests.

Its essential for Sparks to work with the RTC, ensuring seniors have convenient transportation options. We need efficient public transportation systems that are senior friendly. Expanded ridesharing platforms, specifically designed for seniors, ensuring their mobility needs are met effectively.

Some seniors have expressed that they would like to go back to work on a part time basis a few days per week; to help them stretch a dollar due to inflation cutting into their pensions and social security and savings. One of the major stumbling blocks for seniors is mastering point of sales systems. We need to create training opportunities for seniors; working with organizations such as JOIN, the Reno Sparks Chamber of Commerce, ARRP, Job Connect and Catholic Charities to expand senior’s skills and help them connect with employers. This helps seniors maintain financial stability, contributes to the Sparks economy and keeps our seniors engaged.

Sparks can create an optimistic future where our growing senior population receives comprehensive care, support and opportunities to live fulfilling lives. It takes collective efforts to turn ideas into reality and I’m confident that with the right resources and determination we can make a meaningful difference for seniors.

Stay up to Date, or want to Volunteer?

Together we can make Sparks a better place for generations to come.
